Starting Point
While still relatively new to the world of web analytics, I believe I have a good feel for the numbers and metrics that really matter. This is both in allowing an understanding of the performance of a website and online marketing and in making changes that will lead to an improvement in this performance.
Web analytics is difficult with many many numbers to look at, making it easy to get lost in them. What I instead intend to do is to simplify this, highlighting the key numbers that should be looked at and pointing out the best direction or directions in which to look at them. I guess I am intending this blog to be a kind of “how to” guide for choosing which numbers are important and doing the analysis on them. This does mean I am going to start with the basics and I know that means this will be old news to anyone who actually knows what they are talking about. However I am hoping that it will be useful for those new to the industry or those who simply have been given access to their company’s website data and told by their manager to produce a report on it.
Hopefully over time I will be able to go further than this and add something to the discussions that really matter. As everyone says, what is really needed beyond KPIs and preformance reporting are actionable insights that lead to real improvements. But in a lot of companies and for a lot of people, some help in getting the foundation right would be helpful too.
