I recently decided that in order to really develop my understanding of web analytics, I needed to be able to dedicate more time to reading/learning about it as well as really being able to spend time with web data, making recommendations for improvement and following through with those improvements. For a variety of reasons, I decided that I would be best placed to achieve this working on my own and not for Nedstat. I moved on from Nedstat at the end of August and will be working as a freelance web analyst in the future.

My goal is to spend at least a day a week reading other people’s opinions about web analytics, participating in forums and writing new posts for this blog. I felt that I was missing out in the past and that this will be the best way for me to learn.

Ideally, I will also be able to spend longer with each client than I was able to while working with Nedstat (based on a lower cost). This should give me the scope to provide a more detailed level of assistance, working with the client on a regular basis to improve their website and online marketing, rather than just being the expert that is involved every couple of months. I would like to be able to work with multiple websites across a range of industries, giving me practical experience to combine with my online learning.

This website will be updated in the next week to include a list of the services I will be offering initially and other relevant details. My feelings are a bit mixed as this is all a bit of a step into the unknown but I know it is a risk definitely worth taking and I am looking forward to where ever this path takes me.

While still relatively new to the world of web analytics, I believe I have a good feel for the numbers and metrics that really matter. This is both in allowing an understanding of the performance of a website and online marketing and in making changes that will lead to an improvement in this performance.

Web analytics is difficult with many many numbers to look at, making it easy to get lost in them. What I instead intend to do is to simplify this, highlighting the key numbers that should be looked at and pointing out the best direction or directions in which to look at them. I guess I am intending this blog to be a kind of “how to” guide for choosing which numbers are important and doing the analysis on them. This does mean I am going to start with the basics and I know that means this will be old news to anyone who actually knows what they are talking about. However I am hoping that it will be useful for those new to the industry or those who simply have been given access to their company’s website data and told by their manager to produce a report on it.

Hopefully over time I will be able to go further than this and add something to the discussions that really matter. As everyone says, what is really needed beyond KPIs and preformance reporting are actionable insights that lead to real improvements. But in a lot of companies and for a lot of people, some help in getting the foundation right would be helpful too.
